# Emergency Garage Door Repair: What to Do When Your Door Won't Work
Few home emergencies are as frustrating.or potentially dangerous.as a garage door that suddenly stops working. Whether you're trapped inside unable to get your car out, or outside unable to secure your home, garage door failures demand immediate attention. At Garage Door South Gate, we've responded to countless emergency calls throughout our service area. Here's our guide to handling garage door emergencies safely and effectively.
Recognizing a True Emergency
Not every garage door problem requires emergency service. Understanding the difference can save you money while ensuring truly urgent situations get immediate attention.
True emergencies include: A door that has fallen and is blocking your vehicle inside or outside the garage; visible damage to springs, cables, or tracks that makes operation dangerous; a door that won't close, leaving your home unsecured; any situation where you or someone else might be in danger.
Non-emergency issues that can wait for regular business hours include: A door that operates but makes unusual noises; cosmetic damage that doesn't affect function; remote control or keypad problems when manual operation works; and slow or sluggish door movement.
Immediate Steps When Your Door Fails
When your garage door suddenly stops working, follow these steps to ensure safety and gather information that will help our technicians serve you faster.
Step 1: Ensure Everyone's Safety
If the door is partially open or in an unstable position, keep everyone.especially children and pets.away from the immediate area. Never attempt to prop up a falling door or pass underneath a door that might fall.
Step 2: Do Not Force Operation
Resist the temptation to repeatedly press the opener button or try to manually force the door. This can cause additional damage and create dangerous situations. If the door is stuck, leave it in place until help arrives.
Step 3: Check for Obvious Issues
Sometimes the solution is simple. Check if the photo-eye sensors are blocked or misaligned (look for a blinking light on the opener unit). Verify that the opener is plugged in and the circuit breaker hasn't tripped. Check the batteries in your remote control.
Step 4: Use the Emergency Release
If you need to get your car out and the door is stuck closed, you can use the emergency release cord (usually a red rope hanging from the opener track). Pull straight down on this cord to disconnect the door from the opener, allowing manual operation. Important: Only use this if the door appears balanced and stable. If springs are broken, the door may be too heavy to lift safely or could fall rapidly.
Step 5: Secure Your Property
If your door won't close and you must leave, take steps to secure your property. Remove valuables from the garage, disconnect the door from the opener to prevent remote access, and consider having someone stay to watch the property until repairs are complete.
Common Emergency Situations and What to Expect
Understanding common emergency scenarios can help you stay calm and know what to expect when our technicians arrive.
Broken Springs
A loud bang followed by a door that won't open usually indicates a broken torsion spring. This is one of the most common emergency calls we receive. The repair typically takes 1-2 hours and involves replacing one or both springs, inspecting and adjusting cables, and testing the door's balance and operation.
Off-Track Doors
Garage doors can come off their tracks due to impact, worn rollers, or track damage. An off-track door should never be forced.doing so can cause it to fall completely. Our technicians will realign the door, repair or replace damaged tracks, install new rollers if needed, and adjust spring tension to ensure proper tracking.
Opener Motor Failure
When the motor fails, you'll often hear clicking or humming but no movement. While you can operate the door manually via the emergency release, motor replacement or repair is needed for normal operation. We carry common opener parts on our trucks and can often complete repairs in a single visit.
Cable Failure
Broken cables are extremely dangerous and require immediate professional attention. Never attempt to operate a door with broken cables.the door could fall unpredictably. Our emergency service prioritizes cable failures due to the safety risk involved.
Preventing Future Emergencies
While some failures are unavoidable, regular maintenance significantly reduces the likelihood of emergency situations. We recommend annual professional maintenance that includes spring inspection and adjustment, lubrication of all moving parts, safety system testing, and cable and hardware inspection.
Between professional visits, monthly visual inspections help catch developing problems. Look for fraying cables, worn rollers, or gaps in spring coils that might indicate impending failure.
